THANK YOU! YOU'RE THE BEST!
almost 3 years ago – Fri, Jul 16, 2021 at 01:47:39 AM

As we write these lines there are exactly 32 minutes left until the Kickstarter campaign for Scarface 1920, our first board game, ends. As we write these lines, the counter continues to climb and skyrockets above 7300 backers, a figure that, to be honest, was not in any of our forecasts. Not even in the most optimistic one. And we knew that we had -that you are going to have- a great board game in hand. In fact, in the month that the campaign has lasted, our main goal has been to convince you that making an effort for Scarface 1920 was worth it. With more or less success, I think we have achieved that.

So if we look back, and forget some odd behind-the-scenes episode you wouldn't believe -we have material to make a movie- all we have to say is thank you. Really, thank you very much. You’re the best!

From now on, we begin a new stage that is much calmer, but just as exciting. We guarantee that we will continue to put all our effort and all our energy so that you enjoy the journey until Scarface 1920 is in your hands. When that day comes, make sure to look in the rulebook because your name will be recorded there, just before the story begins. Your story. The one about the gangster who aspires to the throne of Chicago.

OVER 7400 BACKERS… THIS IS INSANE...

EXCLUSIVE CAPONE MINIATURE, THE LAST STRETCH GOAL
almost 3 years ago – Thu, Jul 15, 2021 at 02:43:28 AM

At the end, Scarface. Al Capone, probably the most famous gangster in history, is the guy who gives our first board game its name and also the one who closes our Kickstarter campaign. Start and finish.

Our latest stretch goal is a miniature in which we see the mythical Scarface with two "Tommy Guns" (Thompson Submachine gun) and his inseparable cigar in his mouth. A spectacular miniature made by our colleagues at Bigchild Creatives that becomes a collectors item being only available in Kickstarter, and that you can also use in your games replacing the default Capone. No one but him deserved this exclusive treatment.

Al Capone's mini is accompanied by the last Job of the campaign, exclusive to Kickstarter and which also has a special relevance for us. The illustration of Gang War, which is how Job's new card is called, is based on the scene that appears on the cover of our game.

Of course, his power is also very special, since it is surely the most devastating job in the entire game. This Job implies that the battle rages between the Chicago gangs, with numerous casualties in the streets. In fewer words: total war!

Gang War is a card that can change the dynamics of a game, since it is capable of drastically reducing the power of gangs. In fact, that's one of its conditions, as it can only be used by players with fewer neighborhoods. As you can see, the board is cleaned of guns and thugs, and the hands of the players are emptied. So many bullets, of course, will get the attention of the Feds. But what did you expect if we are gangsters, right?

By the way, thank you. Thank you very much for helping us get here. It has been a pleasure to share with you our passion for board games and we are looking forward to you playing Scarface 1920. By the way, your effort will be recorded forever, since the name of all the backers will appear in the rulebook in the edition of Kickstarter. THANK YOU!

KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE UNLOCKED AND A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS BEFORE THE END
almost 3 years ago – Thu, Jul 15, 2021 at 01:03:20 AM

Scarface 1920's Kickstarter campaign is coming to an end, but that doesn't mean we're done with the news. In fact, we still have one last stretch goal to unlock, some more updates... and everything that will come later, when the campaign is over.

In addition to the stretch goal that you just unlocked, today we have some important news to tell that will answer to some of the requests that we've been reading in the comments in recent weeks.

Customized crime rate markers unlocked… and a surprise!

In the last update we said goodbye with the idea that we would write again soon... and we were not wrong. In just 24 hours, the penultimate of the stretch goals of the Scarface 1920 campaign has fallen: customized crime rate markers. It is a Kickstarter Exclusive, so it is only for those of you who are with us here and now.

The Kickstarter campaign for Scarface 1920 has served, among many other things, to maximize the personalization of each of the gangs present in the game. Thus, for example, we have obtained the different thug sculpts for all the gangs, the unique building designs for each gang, a different vehicle for each of them and, now, also a custom crime rate marker.

Do you like them? Well, you'll like them even more because they come with a surprise gift: two exclusive Federal Raid cards! Both, the only ones of their kind, have illustrations based on a historical photo of the time and only you, the Kickstarter backers, will have them. Congratulations!

By the way, the last stop of this wonderful adventure could only be about... him, the gangster that gives our game its name, Scarface. Go get him!

The characters of Scarface 1920

If we've been insistent on one thing throughout the Kickstarter campaign, it's that Scarface 1920 is a very immersive game. Our obsession has always been to put players in the shoes of a gangster of the time. To do this, in addition to polishing all the mechanics to fit the narrative, it was necessary to introduce the real characters that starred the Prohibition. What's more, their skills and their impact on the game had to be true to their actions during those years. That is, if Rocco Perri was Canada's top bootlegger, his Associate card is a Bootlegging crime type and is specially good at dealing with alcohol through his skills.

In that sense, Scarface 1920 has around thirty real characters, including the four great stars of story: Al Capone, Dean O’Banion, Stephanie St. Clair and Arnold Rothstein. Through the comments, many of you asked us for more information about those characters, so here we leave you (in PDF and ready to be printed) a pinch of the story, for those who want to dive deeper in the context in which Scarface 1920 takes place. Enjoy it!

Two new game variants… thanks to you!

One of the best things that happened to us in the Scarface 1920 campaign, which as you know is our first board game, is the enormous participation we have had in the comments sections. We have tried to answer almost all your questions and concerns and, as we have explained in several updates, we have also taken note of your suggestions to introduce them into the game.

Among the proposals that you have made, there are two that we have already been able to test and that, while waiting to delve into details, will work and will allow to expand the gaming options of Scarface 1920.

  •  ONE MORE NEWSPAPER: The game starts right before the “extra extra” slot, so a new “News” card is added. That means there are more events and therefore more variety, more depth in each game, and of course, more immersion.

  •  ASSOCIATES DRAFT: At the beginning of each game, after the Jobs draft, there would be a second draft with Tier 1 Associates and a single star (specifically, twice as many Associates as players would enter that draft). Following a specific selection system, each player will choose two cards from Associates that he can exchange, if he wants, for two of his gang members (except for the Boss). That is, he could change the two Associates for the two lieutenants or for the two bodyguards, one by one or not change at all. With that, each player can create new strategies from the selection phase, multiplying the possibilities in each game.

The Solo Mode, a gold mine to discover

Another of the star themes of the campaign has been the rules and possibilities of the Solo Mode. As we specified at the beginning, it is a fully operational game mode, but it is still under development. In any case, in the last hours we have updated the rules of Scarface 1920 and we have included the rules of the solo mode (starting on page 22), just as you had asked us through the comments.

This is not the only new announcement about the solo mode... In fact, in recent weeks, and also thanks to the contributions of some of you, we have been testing variants of the solo mode that clearly expand the gameplay options of Scarface 1920. At the moment, we know that one of them is fully functional: games with two players and an Automata (Enforcer).

In this case, the rules and the deck of cards not only work like a charm, but also offer a very interesting variant to games with two players. In normal games between two players, the opponent to beat is always the guy in front, obviously. With the inclusion of an Enforcer automa, players must decide whether to team up to stop the Enforcer or if they are able to use their skills in some way to take control of the city of Chicago. In this sense, the strategy and depth of the games are considerably increased, which also entails a new challenge for the players: they will not only have to dominate the "real" enemy, they will also have to exercise control over the Enforcer.

Friends, see you tomorrow!

KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE: UNIQUE CAR FOR EACH GANG!
almost 3 years ago – Wed, Jul 14, 2021 at 01:30:11 AM

A couple of months ago, shortly before the start of the Scarface 1920 campaign on Kickstarter, we published an article on our website that listed all the vehicles in the game. Well, thanks to your efforts, that article has become obsolete. Now each gang has their own vehicle model, further raising the level of customization for Scarface 1920. Oh, and it's exclusive to Kickstarter backers. Congratulations!

The Cadillac Series 341-A Town Sedan, the original Scarface 1920 model car, is one of the vehicles that belonged to Al Capone and is obviously going to remain the official vehicle of The Chicago Outfit. Therefore, it is the other three gangs in the game that release a new car:

  • 1928 Nash Advanced Six Coupe: The nicest new car in the game (personal opinion) is this 1928 Nash brand machine, one of the best-selling ever. As of today, it belongs to Stephanie St. Clair and her Black Wolves Gang.
  • 1920 Packard Twin Six: This beautiful convertible from Packard, a manufacturer of luxury automobiles until the 1950s, is the car that Dean O'Banion's North Side Mob will ride on the streets of Chicago.
  • 1930 Ford A Phaeton: Arnold Rothstein's new toy. This spectacular Ford Phaeton, heir to the mythical Model T, has appeared in some of the most famous gangster movies and now belongs to Rothstein and his gang.

The exclusive car model for each gang is one of the last stops in our Kickstarter campaign... but no the last one. By the way, the next stretch goal is already out there! See you soon!

STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED: ORDER IN THE BOARD!
almost 3 years ago – Tue, Jul 13, 2021 at 07:50:47 PM

Scarface 1920 backers, we have to congratulate you twice: first, because you have unlocked the long-awaited Gametrayz inserts, one of the most insistent requests since we started the campaign; and second, because you have achieved it in record time. Is it just me or was yesterday's rush pretty awesome? The Gametrayz insert, remember, is FREE for everyone who has backed Scarface 1920 during the Kickstarter campaign, although it can also be purchased separately.

It goes without saying that this stretch goal is one of the most spectacular of the entire campaign due to its level of customization and its enormous usability. If you allow me, Scarface 1920 was already a tremendously beautiful game on the table, but with the new inserts we went one step further.

IMPORTANT: we cannot show all the final material yet because we are working on it. As you know, the idea of including the Gametrayz as a stretch goal is a response to the (many) requests that you have made since the Scarface 1920 campaign began, and we are working hard on it. We will show the other trays on the following days, but we can assure you will love them. Sorry for the inconvenience.

UPDATE: Yes, the Gametrayz is made to use the cards with their sleeves.

Gametrayz Insert: list of contents

Lovers of order and aesthetic excellence, your time has come! What does our insert contain? 6 premium quality trays (Gametrayz seal) made entirely custom for the game: 4 player trays, 1 resources tray and 1 common elements tray, which we detail below. By the way, all trays will come inside the Scarface 1920 box.

PLAYER TRAY

The jewel in the crown is the Player tray, which facilitates the initial setup and contains everything the player needs for each game. There are four in total, one per gang, with the following elements:

  • Miniatures
  • Vehicles
  • Control markers
  • Color cubes
  • Gang board
  • Thugs board
  • Gang Member cards
  • Screen

The lid of that tray becomes the player area and is designed to place the screen and store your money, as well as vehicles and business markers. It has also special spots to put the cards that you use during the game, such as jobs.

TRAY OF COMMON ELEMENTS

This is a specific tray to store all the cards and common elements that make up the game. For example, the "friend" Eliot Ness, who as you know has his own miniature and who patrols through the crime track putting order in Chicago. Or the ring, which starts without an owner, but will circulate among the players based on the last player who has extended his gang through the Associates. Also contains Associate cards, jobs, dealers, news or police cars, among other common stuff, will also go in this tray.

TRAY OF RESOURCES

The last of the trays will be used to store resources: alcohol, guns, money tokens and business markers. In this case, the tray can be placed by the board and will allow an easy access to all those elements that players need to move constantly. IMPORTANT: yes, the resource tray will be compatible with the Wooden Crates, that is, the boxes will fit into these pieces to make them even gorgeous.

From Redzen Games we have made a very important effort to make the Gametrayz Insert free exclusively for Kickstarter backers and really hope you enjoy it!
